As an old English adage has it, ‘all is fair in love and war’. Upon closer consideration, falling in love and fighting a war have much in common – passion, obstinacy, hurt feelings, irrational waste of resources and a strong desire to hurt your opponent. Perhaps, then, ending a war is similar in some ways to finishing an ill-fated romance. What will it take in the case of Ukraine?
