Alexey Navalny has been detained shortly after being released following 30 days in police custody, his aide said. He is now being investigated for breaking Russian laws in relation to public gatherings, according to local media.
Navalny was detained right on the doorstep of a detention facility, top aide Leonid Volkov wrote on Twitter. “They opened the door and escorted him right to the van,” he tweeted.
Volkov later said that a new investigation has been launched into Navalny’s conduct during unauthorized protests. He could face up to 20 days of renewed custody.
This is not the first time that Navalny has faced such charges. He was previously sentenced to 30 days of civil arrest for breaching the Russian law on public protests during his January ‘voters’ strike’ rally. At the time, the court said the sentence was given because he had attempted to organize the protest without coordinating with city authorities.
