ISIS-linked terrorist attack on bus terminal thwarted – FSB

Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) said on Friday that it foiled a terrorist plot targeting a bus terminal in the southern city of Essentuki.

According to an official statement, FSB officers detained one man suspected of preparing the attack, allegedly a migrant from a Central Asian republic and a member of Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS).

The FSB published footage of the arrest and subsequent interrogation. In the video, the detainee is heard confirming that he “pledged allegiance” to IS and planned to carry out the attack on the group’s orders. After the attack, he planned to travel to Syria to join the terrorist organization.

The suspect planned to use an improvised explosive device to carry out the attack, the FSB said. Officers said they discovered components for the device in a hiding place in a garage rented by the detainee. They also said the suspect studied the site of the attack, attempting to determine the time of mass gatherings of people there, and had selected the spot to plant the explosive device before being apprehended. Propaganda materials of a terrorist nature were found at the suspect’s place of residence.

A criminal investigation was launched into the case on charges of ‘preparation of a terrorist act.’ The suspect faces a maximum penalty of life imprisonment.

Earlier this month, the FSB said it foiled another attempted terrorist attack in the southern region of Adygea. The suspect, also a migrant from a Central Asian republic, allegedly targeted an Orthodox church in the city of Maykop and intended to kill priests and set the building on fire.

In March, a major terrorist attack took place at the Crocus City Hall concert venue outside Moscow, which claimed over 140 lives. Four gunmen stormed the venue, shooting indiscriminately and setting fire to the building.

ISIS-K, an Afghanistan-based offshoot of Islamic State, claimed responsibility for the attack, but Russian investigators later said they found evidence pointing to the possible involvement of Ukraine’s security services.
