The flag of the Syrian opposition has been raised over the country’s embassy in Moscow after President Bashar Assad was deposed by an armed coalition over the weekend.

On Sunday, workers at the mission removed the flag of the Syrian Arab Republic and the corresponding nameplate from the building. On Monday, they were replaced with a new tricolor, consisting of green, white, and black stripes and three red stars. The old flag had a red stripe instead of the green one and only two stars featured in the middle.

According to TASS, the atmosphere around the Syrian embassy has been calm and it continues to operate as usual.

The new flag has also been hoisted at Syrian embassies in other countries, including Spain, Greece, Serbia and Sweden.

Several other Syrian missions, including those in Malaysia, Indonesia, and Egypt have also changed their social media profile pictures to depict the flag of the Syrian revolution instead of the old government tricolor.

They have also shared a statement by the Syrian Foreign Ministry that all embassies would continue to serve Syrian citizens abroad.

Various opposition groups, including Hayat Tahrir-al-Sham jihadists and US-backed Free Syrian Army fighters, seized control of Damascus on Sunday following a swift advance across the country. The Syrian Army retreated and former President Assad and his family have been granted asylum in Russia.
