A Russian man has been arrested on suspicion of carrying out a series of sabotage and terrorist acts on behalf of the Ukrainian intelligence services, Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) has said.

The suspect, who is in his mid-forties, performed arson attacks against military and civilian infrastructure in Russia between 2023 and 2024, the FSB said in a statement on Thursday.

His targets included a military tractor vehicle undergoing repairs, a railway relay cabinet, a cell phone tower, and a warehouse of a civilian firm manufacturing products for the Russian Defense Ministry, it added.

Acting on his own volition, the man established contact with an operative from the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) in 2023 and underwent training on covert activities and manufacturing improvised incendiary devices, the FSB alleged.

In return for carrying out acts that harmed Russia’s economic security and defense capabilities, Ukrainian intelligence agents promised the suspect forged documents that would allow him to travel to an EU country, according to the agency.

However, after completing his final act of sabotage and requesting “evacuation” from Russia, the suspect’s handler from the SBU cut off all communication with him, the FSB stated.

A criminal case on sabotage has been launched against the man, according to the agency. The relevant article of the Criminal Code carries a punishment of between 12 and 20 years in prison. The suspect is currently giving a confessionary testimony within the framework of the case, saying that he repents of his actions, the agency said.
