The deal was reached after more than eighteen months of negotiations between the two countries. A final agreement to station ten interceptor missiles in the country is yet to be discussed by the Polish Parliament. The U.S. had already signed a pact last month to build a tracking radar in the Czech Republic. Russia is strongly opposed to the plans, saying the U.S. shield is a threat to its national security and would undermine military balance in Europe.
