Mama Uganda

Mariam Nabatanzi may be the most fertile mother in Uganda. Aged 39, she has given birth 15 times, and has an astonishing 38 children. As a young girl, she was married off to a much older man, who abandoned the family a few years ago. Now Mariam takes any menial job she can find to feed and educate her children. While Mariam’s story is extraordinary, it reflects the unfortunate reality for thousands of Ugandan girls. The country has one of the world's highest child marriage rates, with 40 percent of girls under 18 getting married. RTD explores the issue and what the government is doing to eliminate it. Don't miss Mama Uganda for Mariam’s heartrending story and a chance to meet the people working to empower and educate Ugandan women.
