Germany & Brazil’s major shake-ups at the polls & anti-Semitic attack rocks US
Anya Parampil speaks with Die Linke, or Left Party, member Bijan Tavassoli to find out what is driving German Chancellor Angela Merkle’s unpopularity, as her governing coalition is slated to lose seats following elections in the state of Hesse. Next, Anya breaks down presidential election results in Brazil, where far-right candidate, Jair Bolsonaro, has been declared winner. Anya shares comments made by Bolsonaro which reveal his support for Brazil’s military dictatorship, which ruled the country until 1985. Psychology Professor Eduardo Vianna joins Anya to explain why he believes Bolsonaro won despite concerns over his anti-woman and anti-worker rhetoric. Later in the show, Anya reports on the horrific anti-Semitic attack at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh, documenting how according to his social media presence, the gunman believed that Jews are responsible for the caravan of refugees making its way towards the United States. Ariel Gold, National Co-Director of Code Pink Women for Peace, joins Anya to talk about what’s behind growing anti-Semitic sentiment in the US as well as efforts to blame critics of Israel and progressive Jews for the assault.
