Addressing modern-day colonialism on July 4th

Saturday is Independence Day. As Americans prepare for the holiday weekend amid a pandemic and ongoing protests nationwide, authorities are also gearing up to protect federal properties and statues. Dozens of Confederate memorials risk being toppled. As the US celebrates America’s independence from Great Britain, former US diplomat Jim Jatras and Former UK MP George Galloway discuss the effects of modern colonialism. This year’s Independence Day celebration is expected to look a little different from years past as the US continues to grapple with a surge of novel coronavirus cases that have led local officials to discourage public gatherings. RT America’s Rachel Blevins has the latest. After years of pressure from the Native American community and others demanding that the Washington Redskins football team change its name, it appears it may finally happen. The recent national conversation on racism has renewed calls for the NFL team to get rid of the offensive name and even prompted sponsors to speak up. RT America’s Faran Fronczak has the story.
