The cringeworthy DNC debates, AFRICOM expanding violence, renewable energy under attack
The second debates for the DNC primary took place this week, and the supposed party of American democrats failed to seriously tackle issues such as climate change, America’s expansive war machine, and growing inequality. Lee opens this show by taking the DNC’s presidential wannabes to task over their weak stances. Then he reports on continuing safety issues with the Boeing 737, temperature high records across the planet, and the growth of violence in Africa as the US military expands its presence there.
In the second half of the show, Natalie McGill looks at the story of an Ohio utility company that bought out seats in their state’s legislature in order to win a $1.1 billion bailout of its failing nuclear power plants. The bailout bill also removed subsidies for renewable energy sources. And to finish the show, Naomi Karavani takes on a trend among some of the worst people in American politics, supporters of gerrymandering. In several states they are using prison populations to make their redistricting efforts seem more fair even though prisoners cannot vote in the majority of states.
