Governments often strategically scapegoat minorities and stoke fears about ‘the other’ to distract from their own failures. These classic divide-and-rule tactics are often used to protect the so-called elite.

However, peddling hate with such drip, drip regularity has an effect…

So why, when a whole country is undeniably built on multiculturalism, do great swathes of the population fall for such a simple but cynical device?
