Devil in ideals? Krzysztof Zanussi, Polish director

US President Ronald Reagan once described Poland as having “contributed mightily” to European civilization while being “magnificently unreconciled to oppression.” That seemed indisputably true three decades ago, when Poland was the first country in Eastern Europe to throw off the shackles of communism – but is that still the case today, when it is the first to openly challenge the EU’s governance?
