“A friend in need is a friend indeed:” the Russians are fond of their equivalent of this saying, but they could hardly have expected, when faced with Western sanctions and efforts to ostracize all things Russian, that Africa would reach out its hand. Most countries on the continent are neutral in the Ukraine conflict and some have even expressed a willingness to mediate it. Could they deliver a peaceful solution?
