Until a few weeks ago, the Ukraine conflict was treated in Western media as a major threat to the rules-based order that will likely to decide the outcome of the battle between the forces of democratic good and autocratic evil. But the explosion of violence in the Middle East has manifested a new order of brutality that has made it much more difficult, even for the self-assured West, to take sides or offer easy solutions. What does this crisis mean for the international system?
