UFC: McGregor vs Diaz rematch set for August

UFC: McGregor vs Diaz rematch set for August

A rematch between Nate Diaz and Conor McGregor has been finally announced for Las Vegas on August 20 as the main fight of UFC 202.

McGregor is widely regarded as one of the most explosive MMA fighters, but was forced to tap out after Nate Diaz took him down with a rear-naked choke in their March bout at UFC 196.

The outspoken Irishman had moved up divisions to face Diaz and there has been real speculation over his future since the defeat.

The rematch was initially scheduled for UFC 200, but McGregor was pulled from the event after failing to fulfil his pre-fight contractual obligations.

The Irishman even went as far as to announce his retirement on social media, while Diaz opted to take a break while the rematch talks stalled.

UFC President Dana White has worked frantically to get the fighters back in the cage.

Diaz has been vocal about the UFC’s preference for McGregor, stating that Jose Aldo was not afforded a rematch after the Irishman knocked him out.

The American has also asked for a bigger piece of the financial pie and is likely to have played hardball over the negotiations to stage a rematch with the man he beat less than three months ago.

The relationship between Diaz and White has previously appeared frosty, with the Californian getting an added bonus in signing the deal by delivering a “happy slap” to the UFC chief.
