01 July 2016

Wales has claimed a famous victory over Belgium, winning 3-1 to secure a place in the semi-final against Portugal in Lyon next Wednesday.

It will be the first time Wales has ever appeared in the semi-finals of a major tournament.

Wales has taken a 3-1 lead against Belgium with just five minutes left to play.

Sam Vokes scored a glancing header from a Chris Gunter cross to put Chris Coleman’s men within minutes of a famous victory.

Wales is leading 2-1 against Belgium.

On 55 minutes, Hal Robson-Kanu received the ball inside the Belgian penalty area with his back to goal, but turned past two defenders and placed the ball past goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois into the corner of the net.

Wales and Belgium are drawing 1-1 at half-time in their quarter-final match in Lille.

Belgium took the lead in the 13th minute when Radja Nainggolan fired in a stunning strike from 25 yards out.

But Wales captain Ashley Williams equalized with a bullet header from a corner in the 31st minute.

After last night's Euro 2016 action saw Portugal book its place in the semi-finals thanks to a penalty shootout win over Poland, tonight we'll find out who their opponents will be when Wales takes on Belgium at the Stade Pierre Mauroy in Lille.

It’s been dubbed as Wales’ biggest game since it played in the 1958 World Cup, while Belgium will be seeking to make its mark as the highest-ranked team in the competition.

The two sides met in qualifying for the tournament with Wales coming out on top, winning 1-0 at home and holding Belgium to a 0-0 draw in Brussels.

Ahead of tonight’s clash, which kicks off at 9pm local time (19:00 GMT), Wales manager Chris Coleman said:

"We're not going to talk [the match] down. We're going to savor this occasion, as we have done all along. This is another huge test and it's another in a line of challenges that we've already met. It's a great position to be in. We've got to go and do all the things that have got us in this position in the first place," UEFA reported.

Belgium manager Marc Wilmots had this to say about the game against Wales:

"A manager is always scared of his team having an off-day… we must remain focused and not take it for granted that we will win easily. It will be a tough match, it's a different opposition this time. [Wales] are a team with pace, who play good football and a lot of them play in England.

They are a side who defend really well and who have real talent on the counterattack. Now the stakes are different, this is no longer a qualification game for points. We are going out there with the semi-finals of the Euro as a prize – that is completely different."

Wales can call on the talents of talisman Gareth Bale, and the Real Madrid star has provided three goals for the team so far this tournament.

Belgium have an array of stars, but stand-out performers have included Chelsea’s Eden Hazard and Manchester City’s Kevin De Bruyne.

Wales’ captain Ashley Williams has been ruled fit for the match after an injury scare with his shoulder.

Belgian central defender Jan Vertonghen will miss out, however, having been ruled out for the remainder of the tournament after tearing ankle ligaments in training.

30 June 2016

Portugal beat Poland 5-3 on penalties in their Euro 2016 quarter final match, booking a spot in the semi finals. The win came after substitute Ricardo Quaresma scored the winning spot kick following Jakub Blaszczykowski's miss.

Portugal will now wait for the winners of Wales versus Belgium match, scheduled for this Friday night to find out their semi-final opponents on July 6.

The Euro 2016 quarterfinal match between Poland and Portugal has gone into overtime, with the teams being level a 1-1 after 90 minutes of play.

The first half of the Euro 2016 quarterfinal match between Poland and Portugal has concluded with a 1-1 score.

The Poles wasted no time, going in front in the 2nd minute of play, with the team’s biggest star, Robert Lewandowski, scoring confidently from inside the box, 1-0.

Portugal equalized half an hour later as a deflection helped 18-year-old talent, Renato Sanches, beat Polish keeper, Lukasz Fabianski, 1-1.

As kick-off approaches in the Poland-Portugal quarter-final, UEFA has shared a video of fans soaking up the atmosphere in Marseille.

The first Euro 2016 quarter-final action takes place this evening, when Poland takes on Portugal at 9pm local time (19:00 GMT) at the Stade Vélodrome in Marseille.

Poland reached the last eight by defeating Switzerland 5-4 on penalties after their game finished 1-1.

Portugal overcame Croatia 1-0 in their clash, when Ricardo Quaresma scored deep into extra time.

Here are some of the key stats to note ahead of this evening's match.

Portugal has a slightly better record in the last 10 encounters between the two countries, winning four games, drawing three and losing three.

The two most recent games between the nations have ended in draws – 2-2 in Lisbon during qualifying for Euro 2008, and 0-0 in a friendly in Warsaw in 2012.

Poland is appearing in the last eight stage at a European Championship for the first time.

Polish striker Robert Lewandowski scored 13 goals in qualifying, but is yet to score at this year’s finals.

Portugal has drawn all its matches during regular time at this year’s tournament.

However, the Portuguese have a strong record of progressing far at European Championships – in the last six tournaments they have finished as semi-finalists three times, quarter-finalists twice, and runners-up (in 2004).

Wales appeared to be happy at England’s demise. The Welsh team celebrated wildly after Iceland’s equalizer on Monday….

And this Icelandic commentator is sure to have a sore throat today…

Iceland is reveling in its famous 2-1 win over England on Monday night in Nice.

The Icelanders fell behind to an early Wayne Rooney penalty, but quickly found themselves 2-1 up thanks to goals from Ragnar Sigurdsson and Kolbeinn Sigthorsson.

They then held out comfortably for the remainder of the game as England controlled possession but failed to create any clear-cut chances.

England manager Roy Hodgson resigned shortly after the game.

The result means the quarter-finals line-up is now complete:

27 June 2016

Defending champions Spain are out, losing 2-0 to Italy at the Stade de France.

Spain dominated the latter stages of the game and forced Italian keeper Gianluigi Buffon into action several times, but Italy claimed a famous win when Graziano Pelle doubled their lead in stoppage time.

The victory gives Italy a measure of revenge for their defeat in the final against the Spanish four years ago.

Earlier, Spain goalkeeper David de Gea had kept his team in the game with a series of fine stops, although ultimately he ended up on the losing team.

Antonio Conte’s men now face Germany in the quarter-finals in Bordeaux on Saturday.

The final last-16 clash kicks off at 9pm local time (19:00 GMT) and sees England vie with Iceland for a quarter-final place against France.

Italy is 1-0 up at half-time in the match against Spain.

Italian pressure told on 33 minutes when defender Giorgio Chiellini followed up after David de Gea had parried an Eder free-kick.

De Gea pulled off a stunning save from a Graziano Pelle header early in the first-half with the scores level, and also denied Emanuele Giaccherinilate late in the half to keep the deficit at 1-0.

The defending champions have it all to do in the second-half.

Today’s Euro 2016 action includes a clash between two giants, as Italy faces defending champions Spain in a repeat of the 2012 final.

Italy will be out for revenge, having lost 4-0 to Spain in Kiev four years ago.

The two sides meet at the Stade de France at 6pm local time (16:00 GMT).

The winners of the tie will be rewarded with a quarter-final against Germany.

Later on, England faces underdogs Iceland in Nice for a place in the quarter-finals against hosts France.

That game kicks off at 9pm local time (19:00 GMT).

26 June 2016

Hungary is heading home after a devastating 0:4 defeat to Belgium, which is set to meet with Wales in a quarter-final match on Friday.

France has booked its place in the last eight of Euro 2016 after coming from a goal down to beat the Republic of Ireland 2-1. Robbie Brady had given the Irish the lead after only three minutes from the penalty spot. However, after being frustrated for long periods, France eventually leveled through Antonie Griezmann’s header on 58 minutes. The French forward scored his second three minutes later to make it 2-1 and help the hosts into the quarterfinals.

There are still five places in the quarterfinals of Euro 2016 left to fight for in order to try and join Poland, Wales and Portugal, who have already booked their spots in the last eight.

25 June 2016

Portugal beats Croatia to progress to a quarter-final clash against Poland.

An uneventful encounter finished 0-0 after full-time and looked to be heading to a penalty shootout, but Ricardo Quaresma headed in from two yards out in the 117th minute to claim the win for Portugal.

Quaresma's goal proved enough to send Portugal through to face Poland, who earlier in the day beat Switzerland in a penalty shootout.

In Saturday’s second match, Wales beat Northern Ireland 1-0 in their ‘Battle of Britain’ last-16 clash in Paris.

Northern Ireland defender Gareth McAuley scored an own goal, turning a Gareth Bale cross into his own net on 75 minutes to give Wales the win.

Wales now plays Belgium or Hungary in the quarter-finals.

Poland beat Switzerland on penalties after the match finished 1-1 after extra-time, with the Poles booking their place in the quarter-finals.

Poland took the lead through Jakub Blaszczykowski on 39 minutes, but Switzerland equalized thanks to a stunning strike from Xherdan Shaqiri eight minutes from time.

No side could press the advantage in extra-time, sending the game into a shootout.

Granit Xhaka was the only player to fail to convert his penalty and Grzegorz Krychowiak scored the winning spot-kick for the Poles as they won the shootout 5-4.

The Poles now face the winners of the last-16 tie between Croatia and Portugal later on Saturday.

24 June 2016

Saturday’s action is rounded off with a mouth-watering clash between Croatia and Portugal in Lens, which kicks off at 9pm local time (19:00 GMT).

Croatia looked in good form in the group stage as they topped Group E, defeating defending champions Spain in the process.

Portugal, meanwhile, failed to earn a win in their group matches, stuttering to three draws – although captain Cristiano Ronaldo sprung to life in the 3-3 draw with Hungary, scoring twice and providing an assist.

It will be an interesting prospect to see the Real Madrid man up against teammate Luka Modric and Barcelona’s Ivan Rakitic in the Croatian midfield.

Saturday’s second game sees the ‘Battle of Britain’, with Wales taking on Northern Ireland at the Parc des Princes in Paris at 6pm local time (16:00 GMT).

Wales impressed many with their performances in topping Group B ahead of England – losing to Roy Hodgson’s men but beating Slovakia and claiming an impressive 3-0 win against Russia.

They will yet again look to star man Gareth Bale for inspiration, and the Real Madrid man will be looking to add to his tally of three goals so far in the tournament.

Northern Ireland qualified as one of the best third-placed teams, but won admirers for their gutsy performances in the group stages. They suffered 1-0 defeats to Poland and Germany, but gained a well-earned 2-0 win against Ukraine, which proved enough to secure their passage to the last 16.

They will look to goalkeeper Michael McGovern to continue his inspired form.

Wales will go into the game as favorites, as Northern Ireland has drawn four and lost four of the past eight games between the two countries – with their last win coming back in 1980.

Euro 2016 enters the knockout rounds tomorrow after a two-day break.

In the first game of the day, Switzerland takes on Poland in Saint-Etienne at 3pm local time (13:00 GMT).

The Poles finished the group stages unbeaten on seven points, second behind Germany on goal difference in Group C.

They will look to misfiring striker Robert Lewandowski to turn things around after a run of six games without a goal.

Midfielder Bartosz Kapustka is suspended for Poland after receiving two bookings during the group stages, while Lukasz Fabianski is set to continue in goal as Wojciech Szczesny is still out injured, Sky Sports reports.

The Swiss finished runners-up in Group A, ending on five points after a win and two draws, but also finding goals hard to come by.

Switzerland has only ever beaten Poland once – in a friendly match 40 years ago – the Poles winning four of the two teams’ 10 encounters, with five draws.

Sixty-nine goals were scored during the group games.

The goals-per game rate for the group stage was 1.92 - the lowest average for a group phase at any European Championship

Sixty-five percent of all goals have been scored in the second-half of matches.

Wales and Hungary scored more goals than any other team – six each.

Three of those Wales goals came in the last group match against Russia, with Hungary also netting three in their last group game against Portugal.

Wales topped their group despite appearing in a European Championship for the first time, with Gareth Bale scoring in all three group games.

Ukraine failed to score a single goal during the group stages – losing all three games in the process.

Northern Ireland’s Niall McGinn scored the latest goal in regular time in European Championship history – netting on 95 minutes 48 seconds in the 2-0 win against Ukraine.

Belgium’s second goal in their 3-0 win against the Republic of Ireland was remarkable in that the Belgians made 28 passes prior to scoring – the most passes leading to a goal since Euro 1980.

Portugal star Cristiano Ronaldo has broken several records at the tournament so far.

He appeared in a record 17th European Championship Finals game when he played against Hungary. He also scored in that game, becoming the first player ever to score in four European Championships.

Ronaldo also became his country’s record appearance holder during the group stage, winning his 128th cap in the second group-stage game versus Austria. He now has 129 caps after appearing against Hungary.

Hungary goalkeeper Gabor Kiraly became the oldest player in European Championship history, and is the only player to have appeared while in his 40s.

Late in the first half, Albania’s captain Lorik Cana left his team with 10 men after being sent off for a second yellow card.

Switzerland lead Group A together with hosts France, who also have three points in the bag after a 2-1 win against Romania on Friday.
