Full-time: Portugal 2-2 Mexico

Hector Moreno scores for Mexico.

The resulting corner from the free-kick comes in and Moreno out-jumps Fonte to nod home.

GOAL! Portugal 2-2 Mexico

(90 mins) Mexico have a free-kick in a dangerous position about 25 yards out on the right, but it's fired across the box and is deflected out for a corner.

(89 mins) Close! Portugal break after a Mexico attack, and Martins spins his man in the box, but puts it just wide of the post.

Hang on though, we're going to the VAR for something....

Was it offside? A handball? It's not entirely clear...

Phew - relief for Portugal! The goal is given.

Not sure what all that was about - but Portugal lead with just under 5 minutes left.

Cedric scores for Portugal. Mexico fluff a clearance in their box and the 25-year-old Southampton man is there to pounce.

GOAL! Portugal 2-1 Mexico

(82 mins) Youngster Andre Silva is on for Portugal. At just 21, he's a hot prospect for Portugal and has netted 7 times in 8 games so far for the national team. He's on for Quaresma. Can the young striker conjure something up for the European champs?

(80) Quaresma has had a fair few shots today. He stings the hands of Ochoa in the Mexico goal, before Mexico themselves break but Giovani dos Santos can only shoot wide.

(78 mins) Another change for Mexico - Raul Jimenez is replaced by Oribe Peralta, 33, who plays his football for Club Mexico in his homeland. It's one striker for another...

(76 mins) Potugal exerting a bit more pressure, but Andre Gomes is a bit too enthusiastic with his pressing around the Mexico box and gives away a free-kick to give El Tri a chance to clear.

Into the last 15 mins - can anyone step up and claim a winner?

(74) Ronaldo gets brought down by Mexican skipper Guardado on the right wing. The Mexican man goes in the book and gets a yellow card. Quaresma lines up the free-kick but sends it past everyone in the box.

(72 mins) Portugal manager Fernando Santos is getting animated on the touchline. He's putting his fingers to his forehead, gesturing to his players to 'focus'.

(68 mins) The first booking of the Confed Cup 2017! Portugal's Adrien Silva goes into the book for a foul, but the resulting free-kick from the edge of the box sails over the bar.

(67) Another change for Mexico - Nestor Araujo comes on for Carlos Salcedo.

The dos Santos bothers: We mentioned that the Mexico substitute was Giovani dos Santos. The midfielder 28-year-old LA Galaxy midfielder joins his younger brother, Jonathan, 27, on the pitch. Jonathan plays his football for Villareal in Spain.

(63 mins) Gomes breaks into the Mexico box and is about 15 yards out, but he dallies on the ball and gets swamped by Mexico defenders, who clear the ball.

The Portugal free-kick after the spate of substitutions came to nothing.

For Mexico, Vela is off (just after we'd praised his efforts), to be replaced by Giovani dos Santos, whose brother Jonathan is already on the pitch.

Moutinho is also off for Portugal replaced by Adrien Silva.

Nani leaves the field for Portugal, to be replaced by Martins.

(57 mins) Portugal finally get some time in the Mexico half. Quaresma spins his defender and gets scythed down to win a free-kick.

A few changes while we wait the free-kick....

(55 mins) Carlos Vela has been lively today. The 28-year-old Real Sociedad man, formerly of Arsenal, breaks down the right but can't wrap his foot round the ball to get the cross in.

(54 mins) Mexico have probably started the half with a bit more intent, as was the case in the first half. Portugal yet to get a foothold since the restart.

(52) Mexico enjoy a spell of possession and there's the sound of some 'oh-lays' from the crowd as they string some passes together. They aren't making much headway at the moment, though.

(49 mins) Mexico have a free-kick on the left of the Portugal box. Guardado, the Mexico captain, swings it in, but it misses everyone and goes out for a goal kick.

Kick-off: The second half is underway in Kazan. More of the same, please!

For some light half-time entertainment, check out our article on one Russia club's cheeky transfer offer to Ronaldo, who is in the midst of a tax scandal in Spain, with reports that he might be on his way out of the Bernabeu. He'd be more than welcome in Russia any time, we're sure...

Here are the half-time stats: Mexico had more of the ball (56% possession), both teams had 2 attempts each on target, with Portugal having 5 shots overall to Mexico's 7.

Well, after a cagey start that turned out to be an incident-packed half. We had the first use of VAR technology at the tournament to rule out a Portugal goal, a well-worked (valid) goal from Portugal, and an immediate Mexico comeback.

The second half is set up nicely!

(45 mins) Vela breaks down the left and pulls the ball back to Hernandez, but he fires miles over. Mexico finishing the half very strongly.

Half-time: Portugal 1-1 Mexico

Mexico are the ones cranking up the pressure now as we approach the end of the half. They responded really well to going behind.

Guerreiro makes a mess of a clearance in the Portugal box, it falls to Carlos Vela who chips the ball in to Chicharito (Hernandez), who heads home from about 5 yards out. He thrives on situations like that. That goal came on 42 minutes.

Javier Hernandez strikes for Mexico.

GOAL! Portugal 1-1 Mexico

(40 min) Ronaldo is starting to fire up now. He plays a wonderful backheel to Quaresma on the edge of the Mexico box, but he shoots just wide.

(39 mins) Mexico try to hit back straight away. Chicharito meets a cross from the right, he gets some power on the header but it's straight at Patricio in the Portugal goal.

That goal is largely down to Ronaldo. The Portugal striker breaks free and reaches the Mexico box, but the ball gets caught under his feet and the Mexico defenders have time to track back, However, they are all sucked to the Madrid man, who has the composure to pause before playing in Ricardo Quaresma, who is completely unmarked on the right of the box. He takes a touch before selling Ochoa a dummy in the Mexico goal and slotting home calmly. The goal was times at 34 minutes...

Ricardo Quaresma scores for Portugal.

GOAL! Portugal 1-0 Mexico

(29 mins) Carlos Vela curls a free-kick from just outside the box, it has Rui Patricio scrambling in the Portugal goal, but lands wide of the right-hand post.

(26 mins) The game is starting to open up a bit now as Ronaldo stretches his legs down the right before turning back. The Portugal move ends up with Gomes, who breaks through, but Ochoa comes out to block well.

Just a reminder that VAR technology is being used in Russia 2017 as FIFA trials the technology ahead of a potential global roll-out. It came in handy there.

Pepe was the man who thought he'd scored after the Ronaldo free-kick, but Nani among others was off-side.

Wow, that was a first! Portugal thought they'd scored, but the referee pulled it to check with the VAR (Video Assistant Referee) on suspicion of offside. The replay showed that they did indeed have several men ahead in offside positions. Correct decision.

GOAL?

Portugal have the ball in the next, but we are going to the Video Referee!

.....But fires it at the wall.

(20 min) Quaresma goes down and wins a free-kick for Portugal. Ronaldo lines one up....

(17 mins) Portugal pressing a little more, Quaresma tries his luck from range but fires wide of Ochoa in the Mexico goal.

The Madrid man has been quiet so far, though.

(15 mins) Mexico enjoying most of the ball so far - they've had 69% of possession in the opening stages.

Portugal megastar Ronaldo was met with a mural of his image near the team hotel in Kazan on arriving in the city. Check our let the level of admiration for the Portugal man - certainly impressive from the locals!

(9 mins) Nani goes down after taking a stray arm while challenging for a header. He looks dazed but it back up after a minute or so and is ready to continue.

The result of RT Sport's Twitter vote is in - it looks like most of you fancy Ronaldo and Co. for the win.

(7 mins) Carlos Vela is bought down on the edge of the box and Mexico have a free kick, but Guardado fires it at the wall and Reyes can't gather the rebound.

(5 mins) Not too much to report in the opening stages. Both teams taking time to settle at the moment.

Kick-off: We are underway in Kazan.

The two team’s top scorers – Cristiano Ronaldo and Javier Hernandez – were looking focused ahead of the game. Well over a century of international goals between these two – some serious scoring talent.

The team news is in ahead of tonight’s game.

Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo is making his 140th appearance for the team, while coach Fernando Santos has plenty of experience elsewhere in the team in defender Pepe and Ricardo Quaresma and Nani.

Perhaps a surprise omission is striker Andre Silva, who has netted 7 goals in 8 games for Portugal so far, but the 21-year-old will surely feature from the bench.

Mexico also have plenty of experience in the side, and boast top-scorer Javier Hernandez – aka Chicharito – to lead the line up front.

Mexico are making a record-equaling seventh appearance at the Tournament of Champions, and are the only nation among this year’s participants to have won the tournament, having been crowned champions in 1999 when they hosted the event – they beat Brazil 4-3 in a classic final.

Portugal are making their debut in the tournament, having won Euro 2016 in France last summer.
