Russian tennis duo, Elena Vesnina and Ekaterina Makarova crushed No.9 seeds Chan Hao-Ching and Monica Niculescu 6:0, 6:0 in less than an hour to bring home their first Wimbledon title.
The No.2 seeded Russian pair produced a dominant performance, needing only 55 minutes to secure victory in one of the most prestigious Grand Slam events, giving their less experienced opponents from Taiwan and Romania no chance for a comeback.
It was Makarova and Vesnina’s second attempt at the Wimbledon doubles title. Two years ago the Russian pair made it to the final but lost to Switzerland’s Martina Hingis and India’s Sania Mirza in three sets, 5–7, 7–6, 7–5. While it is Vesnina and Makarova’s maiden Wimbledon title, they are also the reigning women’s doubles Olympic champions. The pair also won the 2013 French Open and the 2014 US Open.
On their way to the final, the Russians secured a relatively comfortable 7:5, 6:2 win over Czech Republic’s Kveta Peschke and Germany’s Anna-Lena Gronefeld. Hao-Ching and Niculescu’s road to the final was more bumpy. They had to overcome stiff resistance from Renata Voracova form the Czech Republic and Japan’s Makoto Ninomiya in a marathon three-hour battle. In the women’s singles, Spain’s Garbine Muguruza celebrated a famous victory over five-time Wimbledon champion, Venus Williams, 37. The 23-year-old Spaniard upset the American veteran in straight sets, 7-5, 6-0.
