Russians have been taking to the streets in their masses to celebrate their nation’s historic World Cup win against Spain which sent the team into the quarter-finals of the tournament.
Goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev was the hero as he saved two Spanish penalties in a shootout after the scores had finished level at 1-1 following extra time at Luzhniki Stadium.
Akinfeev made a stunning decisive save to deny Iago Aspas, sticking out his leg while diving to his right to divert the ball away from goal, handing Russia a 4-3 shootout win sending the team into the quarter-finals at their home World Cup.
After Akinfeev saved the final spot-kick, the Russians among the 78,000 fans in attendance at Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow went wild, as did their compatriots all around the country.
