Son Heung-min was the late star for Tottenham with a solitary strike on 78 minutes to hand Spurs a 1-0 win against Manchester City in their crucial UEFA Champions League quarter final first leg in London.

Son squeezed home under the body of City keeper Ederson after seemingly missing his initial chance to score, but then keeping the ball in play to maneuver himself into a position to shoot.

What was the first of 11 meetings between the two sides, which will no doubt be instrumental in the Premier League standings and consequently Manchester City's hopes of an unprecedented, quadruple didn't start swimmingly for Tottenham.

Early in the first half, Raheem Sterling cut in from the left flank to shoot from just inside the Spurs penalty area, only for his shot to riches off a grounded Danny Rose.

City players appealed for a penalty and when Dutch referee Bjorn Kuipers consulted VAR, he adjudged the ball to have hit Rose's outstretched arm and changed the direction of the goal bound strike.

Luckily for Spurs, the normally reliable boot of Sergio Aguero sent the ball to Hugo Lloris' left hand side at a comfortable height for the goalkeeper to save on 13 minutes.

Things went from bad to worse in the second half for Spurs, despite the game being level at 0-0 the second half. Striker Harry Kane was forced off after 55 minutes when a touchline collision with Fabian Delph resulted in suspected ligament damage for the England skipper.

Footage showed Kane being helped down the tunnel by club staff, seemingly unable to make it to the dressing room under his own strength.

Then the breakthrough came when Son was played through by the instrumental Christian Eriksen and, although looked to have originally squandered his chance, regrouped to finish low and hard into the City net to give Spurs the first leg advantage.
