Portuguese marksman Cristiano Ronaldo has struck a potentially fatal blow to Ajax's Champions League hopes as he scores a sublime diving header to give Juventus the lead against the run of play in Amsterdam.

Who else but Cristiano? In a first half in which Ajax dominated vast swathes of the first leg tie against Juventus in the Johan Cruijff ArenA, it took five time Ballon d'Or winning forward Cristiano Ronaldo to break the deadlock.

Ajax looked by far the closer team to scoring in the first 45 minutes. Their young side, spearheaded by youngsters Matias De Ligt and the Barcelona-bound Frenkie De Jong, appeared quicker to every ball early in proceedings.

However, after another particularly ambitious foray up the field Juventus broke down the right where Cancelo delivered a deft cross into the heart of the Ajax defense which appeared to part like the Red Sea as Ronaldo dove forward to connect with his head and send the ball past the despairing grasp of Andre Onana.

It is Ronaldo's 23rd headed goal in the Champions League play (and 97th overall) and who would bet that it is his last?
