French female weightlifter Gaelle Nayo Ketchanke sustained multiple fractures of her arm while attempting a 110kg (243 pounds) snatch at the European championship in Batumi, Georgia.
The 31-year-old, who was competing in the women’s 76kg category, was lifting the weight when her left arm suddenly buckled leaving the crowd in a state of shock.

The attempt, streamed live, showed Ketchanke’s elbow snapping and bending while the athlete was struggling to drop the weight safely on the floor.
The athlete was screaming in agony when coaches and medical staff members rushed to help her.

Ketchanke was taken to a local hospital for a detailed medical examination revealing that she had multiple fractions and elbow dislocation.
The gruesome injury put the athlete’s Olympic dreams in question, as it remains unknown whether she will be able to recover by the time the 2020 Tokyo Games begin.
