Mesut Ozil's wedding with Turkish President Erdogan as best man meets with mixed reaction
Arsenal playmaker Mesut Ozil has come under fire from some sections of football supporters for selecting Turkish leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan as his best man at his wedding to former Miss Turkey Amine Gulse on Friday.
Ozil, who is of Turkish heritage but represented Germany during his career, caused a storm a year ago when he posed for photographs with Erdogan before last summer's World Cup in Russia.
The furor that followed prompted the 92-cap midfielder to retire from international football, claiming he experienced "racism and disrespect" in the wake of the images.
The player received more criticism in his homeland after he announced in March that he had asked Erdogan to be his best man in advance of his wedding to Gulse, whom he started dating in 2017.

Questions were asked in Germany as to where Ozil's loyalties lay, and this was only amplified as the defending champions crashed out in group stages last year.
Ozil announced his retirement from international football shortly after saying, "I am German when we win, but I am an immigrant when we lose," and that he "no longer want[ed] to wear the German national team shirt."

The previous election, which saw his AKP candidate narrowly defeated, was annulled in a move which drew harsh criticism from the international community.
Erdogan is in his fifth year in office and has been credited with improving Turkey's economy, but his opponents cite his autocratic tendencies and a negative human rights record among his deficiencies.

Meanwhile, Ozil and his bride made a sizeable donation to the Turkish Red Cross, as well as asking guests to donate to BigShoe, a charity which funds emergency operations for children, instead of giving wedding gifts.
"As a professional footballer I am in a fortunate and privileged position," Ozil wrote on Twitter.
"However, I invite everyone who is willing and able to help to support a very special project close to both of our hearts. Amine and I will bear the expenses for surgeries of 1000 children in need."
Despite the philanthropic nature of his wedding, several football supporters have renewed their criticism of Ozil for his continued association with Erdogan.

Erdogan at Ozil's wedding is easily one of the top 5 comedic moments of the year and if you don't agree then I'm sorry but you simply don't understand comedy.

I'm agreeing with you! I was being sarcastic implying Ozil can't/won't read news so doesn't give a damn about Journalists imprisonments. Not to mention the Mayors 'vote' last month. Erdogan is borderline copy of Orban. It's disgusting to see Ozil do this. Truly disgusting.
