Pishchalnikova misses out on discus throw gold

Russia’s Darya Pishchalnikova could only manage a silver medal in the women’s discus throw, with the London Olympics gold going to Croatia’s Sandra Perkovic.

Pishchalnikova entered the competition as a favorite, owning the season’s best of 70.69 meters – the longest throw in the world for the last 20 years. But the 27-year-old couldn’t perform on the same level in London, sending her discus only to the 67.56-meter mark. The Russian couldn’t hold her tears when she saw that the result of her final try wasn’t good enough to beat the 69.11-meter throw by Perkovic. Li Yanfeng brought another medal for China, finishing the night in third, with 67.22 meters.
