Italian Marco Franzosi has died of a heart attack after taking part in the Rome City Marathon on Sunday, AFP news agency reports.

The 46-year-old was described as an experienced athlete. He completed the 26 mile course in just over three and a half hours.

The Parma resident collapsed in a road near his hotel in the Italian capital an hour and a half after the marathon.

Kenyan Benjamin Kiptoo Kolum claimed victory in men’s race, setting the fastest marathon time on Italian soil: 2 hours, 7 minutes and 17 seconds.

Firehiwot Dado from Ethiopia was the fastest among the women, crossing the finish line after 2 hours 27 minutes and 9 seconds.
