The long-running tensions and ‘shadow war’ between Israel and Iran escalated into direct hostilities in April 2024, when the two nations openly attacked each other. It started with an airstrike on the Iranian consulate in Damascus, Syria, in which seven officers of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), including two generals, were killed. Tehran blamed the attack on Israel and, two weeks later, fired a massive barrage of drones and missiles at the Jewish state. Israel said this only caused minor damage, as its Western allies helped to stop most of the weapons in the air. Tehran said the issue was resolved but Israel reportedly launched its own retaliatory drone attack on Iranian soil on April 18.
