Police were called after former MP George Galloway was “attacked” with glitter by student protesters during a university talk on Tuesday night.
Galloway says his pregnant wife jumped to his defense as he addressed students at the University of Aberdeen.
He says he was left feeling “a little unwell” after the “unknown substance” got in his eyes and lungs, but he continued with the talk nonetheless.
"It goes in our eyes, and goes down your throat, and I'm still feeling a bit throaty with it today. It wouldn't appear to have been toxic, but you don't know that at the time it's being thrown in your face," he told TalkRadio.
"My six month pregnant wife didn't know, and she ended up leaping over the desk and intervening, trying to protect me. It was all a bit hairy."
Footage obtained by the Mirror Online appears to show several people carrying placards walking in front of the stage where Galloway is speaking. The video then seems to show a shower of gold, then green glitter being thrown in the air.
In the video, partially captured on Periscope, a woman can be seen leaping over the desk towards the stage in an attempt to apprehend the culprits and a scuffle breaks out, with a woman repeatedly shouting, “Who did that?”
Galloway tweeted later: “Someone calling themselves ‘Trans’ and an ‘anarchist’ led a five person attack on me on the platform at Aberdeen University. I continued. I now have an unknown substance in my eyes and lungs and feel a little unwell. But the struggle continues.”
“Few weeks go by when the ‘identity politics’ crowd don’t strike one campus or another either physically or with their ‘no platform’ demands… my pregnant wife leapt forward to defend me God bless her.”
A police spokesman told the BBC that officers had attended High Street in Old Aberdeen following reports of a disturbance.
“Inquiries are at an early stage and no further details are available at this time,” he said.
