Four men aged between 15 and 51 have been arrested in connection with the murder of Northern Irish journalist Lyra McKee, who was gunned down by the self-styled New IRA in Derry last month.

The four suspects are currently being held in Belfast and questioned under terrorism laws by Northern Irish police, following a number of raids at houses around Derry on Thursday morning.

McKee, 29, was shot in the head while covering a riot in the city on April 18. The dissident republican group later claimed responsibility for the killing, saying it had accidentally shot the young woman.

Three suspects, two men aged 18 and 19, and a 57-year-old woman, were previously arrested in connection with McKee’s death but later released without charge.

The New IRA has been linked to a recent series of violent attacks, including several parcel bombs sent to buildings in London and Glasgow. Representatives of the group have blamed Brexit and the possible return of a hard border between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland for inciting its recruitment of young supporters.
