One person has died and four others received medical treatment after a 20-meter crane crashed on top of two terraced houses in Bow, east London, London Ambulance Service has said.

Videos posted on social media show the mangled remains of the collapsed construction crane and the damaged roof of a nearby house. The condition of those inside the building is not known at this time.

First responders treated four people at the scene, two of whom were taken to hospital with head injuries. "Sadly, despite the efforts of emergency services, a fifth person has been found and died at the scene," the ambulance service later tweeted.

London Fire Brigade said they were called to the incident at 2.39pm BST Wednesday, with at least 10 engines called in to help search for people trapped at the scene.

The London Ambulance Service said it also had a number of crews and specialist paramedics who work in hazardous environments in attendance.

LFB Assistant Commissioner Graham Ellis confirmed that the crane had fallen onto a block of flats still under development and “two terraced houses on Compton Close."

Firefighters also used a drone to help survey the scene while the search was ongoing.
