'Putin the peacemaker' T-shirts now on sale at designer store in NYC

A Manhattan designer is selling tees with images of the Russian president. The Peacemaker collection, he says, is set to show a different, non-mainstream attitude towards the Russian president.

Vladimir Putin's birthday on October 7 was selected as the opening date for the pop-up store in the Gramercy neighborhood.

There are six designs to choose from, each retailing at $25. The collection is expected to sell out in two weeks.

US artist Julius Kasinskis, the designer, says his aim is to show Americans the positive features of Putin, as opposed to the negative views on the Russian leader in the mainstream Western media.

“It's all about the idea of people portraying Putin as a different person. And my idea of him is totally different of what I hear as ‘common knowledge,’ especially in the United States,” Kasinskis told RT.

The designer added he was mostly inspired by the events in Syria, Crimea and Ukraine, and how the Russian president was counterbalancing the West.

Kasinskis was especially impressed with the way Putin “influenced Obama and other Western countries, not to go on and take drastic measures.”

Acknowledging the fact that “different opinions count,” the designer hired two security guards for his pro-Putin outlet – as a precaution.

To Russians, and tourists visiting the country, the idea of Putin in fashion is by no means new.

Designer Alexander Konasov has hundreds of designs featuring the president in his Patriot collection. Putin in birch trees and various images labeled “Putin is my hero” printed on T-shirts and sweatshirts costing about $100 have been selling like hotcakes both online and in downtown Moscow.

Another brand, Anyavanya, has sold thousands of Putin prints on clothes, causing long lines at Moscow's historic GUM department store. The sellers say international celebrities such as Mickey Rourke and Steven Segal are among their customers.
