A gunman opened fire at the William Beaumont Army Medical Center in El Paso, Texas on Tuesday, prompting officials to dispatch local police, military personnel, and SWAT to the scene. The shooter is dead, as is one other individual.
At a press conference Tuesday evening, Major General Stephen Twitty confirmed the shooter’s death and said there was one more casualty, who is also deceased. Neither the shooter nor the casualty were identified.
All other patients and hospital staff are safe, Twitty said. The FBI is currently investigating the situation.
“Everything is under control,” Twitty said, adding that there is no threat to the local community or Fort Bliss.
Multiple police agencies responded at the scene earlier in the day, as well as two helicopters and a SWAT team, according to local outlet KFOX14. Personnel from the Department of Homeland Security, border patrol, and military police were also involved.
Previously, CNN reported that the individual wounded two people when he opened fire at the Army clinic.
Meanwhile, US Rep. Beto O'Rourke reportedly told CBS4 anchor Shelton Dodson that a doctor was shot, and the shooter ended up killing himself.
Following reports of an active shooter, the entire facility and the connected veteran's hospital were placed in lockdown. SWAT teams reportedly entered the complex, which has 11 floors and is connected to the veteran's hospital via a corridor.
