‘If I was black I’d be picking cotton’: Student’s prom proposal gets him banned (PHOTO)
An Ohio high school student’s racist prom proposal has sparked a backlash after he referenced being black and “picking cotton” to get his date to come to the dance with him.
The unnamed Clear Fork student was photographed standing next to a girl holding a poster reading, “If I was black I’d be picking cotton, but I’m white so I’m picking U for prom!”
Clear Fork Valley Local Schools Superintendent Janice Wyckoff said in a statement that the student in question had been “spoken to” over the inappropriate message and is remorseful, the Mansfield News Journal reports. The Facebook post that shared an image of the sign has been deleted.

“Our student body should not be defined by a single act of a student, who did not think his action through,” Wyckoff said. “This is a teachable moment for this student in particular and for all students.”
The student is now not allowed attend the Clear Fork High School prom. “I want everyone to remember this is a child and adolescent who made a bad decision and is learning a lesson the hard way,” the schools superintendent added.
