A magnitude 5.6 earthquake has struck some 5km from the coastal city of Petrolia in Northern California. There have been no reports of casualties or damage.

People shared their accounts of feeling tremors on social media.

There is no threat of a tsunami. The epicenter of the earthquake was 9.5km deep, according to the United States Geological Survey.

Tremors are frequent in this part of the US, as it is close to a fault line between earth plates. There was a series of small earthquakes in Southern California in June dubbed "swarmageddon" in the media.
