A gunman has opened fire inside an elderly apartment complex in Vancouver, Washington – killing one person and injuring two – and barricaded himself in an apartment, triggering a massive police response and an hours-long standoff.
SWAT teams and dozens of heavily-armed officers, including an ATF agent, surrounded the Smith Tower retirement community equipped with shields, rifles, armored vehicles and even a drone after one of the residents opened fire in the lobby and withdrew into his own apartment.
Three people were shot in the attack, leaving one dead and two with injuries. The surviving victims were rushed to PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center, where they are in “satisfactory condition,” according to the hospital.
As police attempted to negotiate with the attacker on Thursday afternoon, the apartment complex was partially evacuated, and other residents were told to remain inside. Police prepared to storm the building, however the suspect surrendered himself before they could do so.
