Trump orders National Guard to withdraw from DC as ‘everything is under perfect control’

With the situation in the capital “under perfect control,” Donald Trump has announced the withdrawal of the National Guard from Washington DC, but warned that the troops may be redeployed if the riots resume.

“I have just given an order for our National Guard to start the process of withdrawing from Washington, D.C., now that everything is under perfect control,” the president tweeted.

The troops will return to their deployment sites for now, but they “can quickly return, if needed,” he said.

Around 3,600 National Guards troops were deployed in Washington as the capital was engulfed in George Floyd protests, like many other cities across the US. At some points, riots broke out not far from the White House, resulting in the presidential residence being placed briefly on lockdown.

This Saturday, Washington witnessed large-scale protests, but thousands who took to the streets acted peacefully.

The withdrawal of the National Guard follows the reported pullout of around 500 active duty soldiers from the city.
