Like national debt or climate change, our children’s children may be the ones who pay for the sins of this generation - and they will likely ask, “Why are there so many copies of this crap book ‘50 Shades of Grey’?”
The ‘erotic’ book which turned on patriarchy fetishists around the globe is now one of the most abundant items at charity shops.
Because of its glue binding, it can’t be recycled and now, for one shop in the Welsh city of Swansea, they’re banned from the donation bin too.
Apparently, Goldstone Oxfam bookshop have so many of the unwanted books, they could soundproof their own Red Room of Pain.
Shop manager David Taylor took to Facebook to say, “We appreciate all your donations, but less Fifty Shades and more 60s and 70s vinyl would be good.”
In other words, less housewife, more hipster.
Oxfam isn’t the only secondhand store suffering from his plague of pulp. Taylor says most charity shops are full of the books, making it impossible to sell them to the curious few who still want to check it out.
Dan Brown novels have traditionally been the main ‘invasive species’ shops battle, but EL James’ trilogy is set to become the biggest pest of all.
Good thing it’s not 2004 anymore, otherwise the shops would also have too many ‘50 Shades’ DVDs.
Perhaps someone will propose putting all the unwanted books into a rocket ship, ideally the one with Rosie O’Donnell, Tom Arnold, etc, and sending it into the sun, thus saving the world for future generations.
