A German University building has been transformed into a virtual video game after IT students installed 56,448 LED lights spanning 14 floors across the front of the building.
The students from Kiel University undertook the mammoth task to light up each of the 392 front windows for “Project Lighthouse”.
Each LED contains a custom-made chip the size of a fingernail which can be controlled by a laptop to move the virtual ‘blocks’ and play classic video games such as Tetris and Breakout.
While the spectacular display has become something of a tourist attraction, it will also be used for future research with plans already underway for a project based around LiFi - a wireless high-speed communication system using light.
"This is not just playing around, we can do proper research with this thing," project manager Jonas Lutz told The Local.
"We put approximately 5,000 hours of work into this.”
The project was inspired by a similar project in Berlin in 2001, Blinkenlights.
