A South Carolina woman missing since August has been found alive in a storage container on a property registered to a convicted sex offender. Kala Brown disappeared with her boyfriend Charlie Carver, whose whereabouts are still unknown.
Brown, 30, was found “chained like a dog,” according to Spartanburg County Sheriff Chuck Wright. "It was pretty emotional, to say the least, when she was found,” he told WYFF.
Todd Kohlhepp, 45, was arrested and charges are pending. “One of the charges will be kidnapping, it could be murder. It could be a number of things," Wright said, claiming there could be four bodies on the property.
The realtor and registered sex offender was convicted of a kidnapping in Arizona when he was 16.
Police received a tip on the location from a sex crime investigator, who warned them of possible bear traps on the property. Deputies heard banging from the container alerting them to Brown’s location. Wright said she had been fed regularly but was "obviously traumatized."
Police believe Kohlhepp, Brown and Carver all knew each other somehow but have not given further details. Brown and Carver were last seen at the end of August. A week later, Carver, who was not an active Facebook user according to his family, changed his profile picture and posted that the couple were fine.
The post did not match Carver’s usual tone and the image posted was a year old according to the family, who suspected his account had been hacked.
Carver’s car was found close to where Brown was discovered.
