New York’s Lady Liberty black out sparks online theories
The Statue of Liberty’s lights went out on Tuesday, becoming a trending topic across social media as people took the timely darkness as a symbol of the discrimination women face in the US.
The Statue of Liberty went dark. Is this for #adaywithoutwomen or bc we have completely lost our #liberty? Hard to tell. #vault7#wikileakspic.twitter.com/ydmLRN7QBt

Perfect symbolism for the Trump era on #DayWithoutAWoman on #InternationalWomensDay. pic.twitter.com/dzj9t5IANC
You know...you don't have to be religious or even spiritual, but the fact that the Statue of Liberty is dark tonight speaks volumes.

Although the lights were out for just an hour, it was enough to convince people that it was a symbolic sign. Some thought the blackout was part of the ‘Day Without Women’, while others said it was a protest against new White House immigration policies.
The ‘Day Without Women’ will see women go on strike from their jobs and not do any domestic work in an effort to highlight “the current racist and misogynist policies of Trump as well as the decades long neoliberal attacks on working people’s lives, which created the conditions for Trump,” the organizers said.

The Statue Of Liberty 'went dark' did it? There's a neat visual metaphor for the state of America.

For what it's worth, if someone cut the power to the statue of liberty as a protest of immigration policy, that would be just stunning.

According to the National Parks Service, the body responsible for the maintenance of the iconic site, the lights went out due to a power outage.
Apparently the Statue of Liberty lights went out due to a power failure. But I would argue women are also protesting due to a power failure.

Others saw Lady Liberty’s descent into darkness as a statement on President Trump’s immigration policy. Some were angry at the thought that the darkness could have been the work of a protester.

The Statue of Liberty has gone dark because the iPhone she was using as a flash light was sold to pay for health insurance.

@sarahlyonsinc Statue of Liberty is ashamed at points-based immigration idea. Refutes her very words.
