Hundreds of public sector employees struck and protested in Athens on Wednesday over government plans to lay off several thousand of additional civil servants as part of a package of austerity measures.
Protesters march through the square outside the parliament buildings, cutting police tape and pushing back police lines. ADEDY, Greece's largest union organised the 48 hour strike, which will continue until Thursday.
The government plans to lay off 11,400 public sector workers this year, as the country enters its fifth year of job cuts in the sector. The country's unemployment rate stood at 27.5 per cent in December, after a record high of 28 per cent in November.
