112-year-old Chechen woman has eyesight restored

Published: 06 April, 2007, 09:00

A 112-year-old woman from Chechnya has had her sight restored in a Krasnodar hospital. Meriam Yasayeva had a cataract, which could have led to glaucoma if left untreated.

A team of workers from the hospital found her in the Chechen capital Grozny, on one of their routine checks of the elderly. The hospital helped to organise her trip to Krasnodar.

Meriam had the first phase of the operation, 3 weeks ago, after which she regained sight in her left eye.

“She couldn't see at all. She used to say to me: 'I can't see!', and after the operation, two hours later, I was standing in front of her and she said, 'Rosa, I can see you'. And from the surprise, I started crying, we were so happy!” said her daughter.
