After the heroics at Euro-2008 in June, Russia is back to the bread and butter of World Cup qualification. The European semi-finalists are getting their South Africa-2010 campaign underway at home to Wales on Wednesday.

The London-based Russian billionaire and FC Chelsea owner, Roman Abramovich, might just have saved the hopes of a footballing nation. There were fears Russia's national coach, Guus Hiddink, would leave his post because he was worried his salary wouldn't b

But Hiddink said Abramovich has assured him he would pay the salary himself if the Football Union failed to do so.

Earlier, the head of the Union confirmed Hiddink and his assistant did not receive the bonuses promised to them.

He also said that each month they struggle to raise enough money to pay Hiddink’s wages.

Guus Hiddink is widely supported by the fans as he led the Russian team to its biggest success since Soviet times – the semi-finals of Euro 2008.
