At least one militant killed in Dagestan shooting

Published: 14 May, 2007, 03:30

At least one suspected militant has been killed and three police officers wounded during an anti-terrorist operation in Khasavyurt, the town in the Southern Russian Republic of Dagestan.

Police say militants who were trapped in a house opened fire after refusing to give themselves up.

During the fight the house caught fire. The suspected militant's body was found in the ruins, but was left badly burnt and is yet to be identified.

According to Dagestan's Interior Ministry, there were two other insurgents who are still to be found.

It is alleged all the three were members of a local terrorist organisation linked to a plot to carry out a terrorist act in Dagestan during May.
