China has successfully landed a warplane on its first aircraft carrier. The new J-15 jet fighter touched down on the Liaoning as part of the ship’s operational tests.

The Liaoning, a refurbished Soviet-made ship, was delivered to the People's Liberation Army (PLA) Navy on September 25 in a move that will bolster China’s ability to project military power.

A video of the landing, broadcast by China Central Television, showed a J-15 tail hook engaging a cable on the deck of the carrier as the jet landed and slowed to a halt. China self-developed the technology for the landing, which some military experts believed would not be ready until next year.

"The successful landing… has always been seen as a symbol of the operating combat capability for an aircraft carrier," Zhang Junshe, vice director of the military's Naval Affairs Research Institute told state television.

Landing a plane on the 300-meter-long carrier was a crucial test in evaluating the ship’s combat readiness. The carrier is expected to be fully operational in about three years.

The crew performed more than 100 training and test programs, the Chinese Navy said, including landings and takeoffs by at least two Chinese-made Shenyang J-15 multipurpose carrier-borne jets.

Beijing bought the partially built aircraft carrier from Ukraine 10 years ago, and completed it at the port of Dalian in China's northeastern Liaoning province. The ship, dubbed 'Varyag' by the Soviet Navy, was sold off after the collapse of the USSR.

The J-15 fighter is believed to borrow design elements from the fourth-generation Sukhoi Su-33 T10K, another Chinese military purchase from Ukraine. The aircraft uses Russian-made engines, and can be armed with precision-guided bombs and both air-to-surface and air-to-air missiles.

Beijing is rumored to be constructing two more independently built aircraft carriers as part of a push to modernize its military.

China is building up its naval capabilities amid rising tensions with its neighbors over several territorial disputes in the East China Sea. A conflict recently escalated with Japan over a group of islands, fueling anti-Japanese riots in China and leading to declining sales of Japanese goods in the country.

China has also seen a rise in similar tensions with Vietnam and the Philippines.

haha....ignorant fools. if you all westerners (US/Europeaans) think you were "civilized" from the beginning of time, you're wrong. Eruopeans have to thank the MUSLIMS for your "education" Remember why the Muslims were in Spain? and what they could do squat for 2-300 years and then finally they stole knowledge from the MOORS that they finally were able to defeat them. And guess which Euroepan were the first to get "civilized?" hahaha.....

It's really regrettable that Chinese communist party elites, whom I have been thinking they are smart, seem to have surrendered to easy militarism idea. China's having Air Carrier will, in a long run, do more harm than good to China because:1) It changes Japanese voters’ perception of China profoundly, gives them valid and compelling reason to arm in full scale.2) It strengthen US-Japan military alliance, help US, Japan, Philippine and Vietnam forming anti-China bloc. Eventually China will end up seeing US and Japanese sophisticated war planes based in chain islands from Vietnam to Okinawa. Japan will add a few more stealth submarines on top of US nuclear attack subs.3) To cope with these enhanced threat from air and underwater, China will build up several air carrier groups, which may seemingly become bigger than US 7th fleet. This will certainly ruin China’s economy. Pathetic propaganda “now China richer than Japan, par with US in terms military” will be soon thrown away by people who realize Chinese per capita income is still less than one tenth of that of Japan or US. 4) As US and Japan begins to see China as more foe than friend, they will cut and repatriate investment from China. They will just watch China will collapse by its own military burden just like former Soviet Union.5) When tension rises in Far East, China’s Air Carrier group will be proven as worthless, checked by Japanese and US subs and air threat. They will just keep sitting in their home port and may become nest for revolution like Hochseeflotte of Germany in the end of WWI. At the end of 19 century, China was economically bigger than Japan in total, but its political system was far-behind. Never admitting their backwardness, they had German build world most powerful battleships (Dingyuan and Zhenyuan) in 1885 and next year sent them to Japan to show off its power. That changed Japan’s public opinion much, shattering down China’s harmless image (victim of opium war).  China has good tradition of civilian control over military. I am hoping the top leaders do something against history repeats by itself.

Now to the J-15, it was a licensed airframe from Su-27 which later improved into the J-11. But the similarity between the Su-27 and J-11 ends at airframe, so does the J-15 and Su-33. All avionics, weapon system are domestically developed and produced. Aside from the powerplant which the Chinese is slowly replacing the AL series with its own WS jet propulsion, everything is done by themselves. So lets get this strait, Chinese is a rising super power and a passive aggressive one at that... History provided that If you make China a friend, they will be the most loyal friend you will ever have provided it is within moral and reason boundaries. They will share all its wonders with you and come to your aid when you are in trouble. However, if you make China an enemy, they will never forget and they will never surrender. This is the Chinese culture, this is how they've survived for thousands of years when ALL other great civilization fell. I've seen both western and eastern cultures, lived in them and conncted by both. Both cultures has things to learn from each other and experience that would help eachother to build a harmonious society.
