Five dead in emergency landing in Ukraine

Five people have died and 15 injured, including an Austrian, when a plane carrying parachute students crash-landed near the Ukrainian capital Kiev.

Survivors have been rushed to hospital from the air field near the town of Borodyanka in the north of the country. Three of them are reported in a critical condition. The Let L-410, with 20 people on board, including three crew members, failed to land properly due to heavy rain and stormy winds, Ukraine’s Emergency Ministry reported.Ukraine’s State Aviation Committee will set up a commission to investigate the reasons for the accident. The L-410 is a twin-engine short-range transport aircraft developed in the 1960s in Czechoslovakia. About half of the more than 1,100 planes built remain in service. The aircraft can carry up to 19 passengers or 18 parachutists onboard depending on the version.
