Turkey's football championship final ended in a mass riot, as hundreds of angry supporters of Istanbul side Fenerbahçe reacted to their team's goal-less draw. The title was given to arch-rivals Galatasaray in the goalless derby.

The game was tense with one player from each side shown the red card.

After the game, Fenerbahçe fans stormed the pitch as well as throwing flares and plastic chairs.

Police had to protect players with their riot shields as they fled to the locker rooms at Fenerbahçe's Sukru Saracoglu Stadium.

The violence continued outside the stadium with Fenerbahçe fans throwing stones at police, turning over trash bins and smashing shop windows. Two police cars were turned over and torched.

The mayhem occurred days after the Turkish Soccer Federation cleared all of the country’s football teams embroiled in a scandal over alleged match-fixing.

Turkey is currently bidding to host two major sporting events: soccer’s 2020 European Championship and the 2020 Olympics in Istanbul. It is highly unlikely the country would be granted both.

To those soccer fans who do this: It is a GAME, and nothing more!! If this is all that gives meaning to your lives, you truly are pathetic losers! An embarrassment to your nation, wherever such actions occur. Show some maturity and class, and not the low-intelligence of a mob upset over a silly, meaningless game.
