Minister opens rescue workers' academy

The head of the Russian Emergencies Ministry, Sergey Shoigu, has been inspecting the work of fire and rescue crews in Russia's Nizhniy Novgorod region.

Mr Shoigu visited a local fire department, where the only centre for emergency medicine in the area is stationed. He examined equipment and spoke with firefighters.

Mr Shoigu opened a rescue training academy, which will prepare firefighters, mountain climbers, and divers.

Tourist fined for illegally buying souvenirs

A court in Central Russia has ordered a Chilean woman to pay a fine of 15,000 roubles (around $US 580) for illegally buying state medals and awards. The 29-year-old student says she had no intention of breaking any laws or harming the country's interests.
