Russian scientists say research carried out by an expedition team in the Arctic Ocean confirms that an underwater ridge is a part of Russia's continental shelf. The area is rich in natural resources.
According to the Russian Ministry of Natural Resources, data collected during the Arctic 2007 mission indicates the Lomonosov Ridge is similar in structure to that of the Russian continent.
Further material from the sea bed will be gathered and eventually documents will be submitted to a United Nations Commission for verification.
