Despite the new round of sanctions imposed against Teheran by the United Nation’s Security Council, Russia’s energy cooperation with Iran will not be hindered.

The statement comes from Russia’s Energy Minister Sergey Shmatko, who signed a road map for joint long-term energy cooperation between the two countries along with Iran’s Oil Minister Massoud Mirkazemi.

According to Shmatko, “the agenda sets nearly no restrain on [the cooperation] oil and gas area; no sanctions can hurt our cooperation,” RIA Novosti news agency reported.

Mirkazemi dismissed the new sanctions altogether, saying they would impact foreign companies that used to work with Iran rather then Iranian companies.

“Truly independent countries do cooperate with Iran,” he said.

Shmatko said Russian companies may export petroleum products and petrochemicals to Iran.

"We have not discussed trading operations, but if there is commercial interest and attractive terms Russian companies are ready to supply oil products to Iran without any doubt," he said.

The road map signed on Wednesday outlines projects in oil, gas and atomic energy, which will involve Russian and Iranian companies. The ministers are to meet again in the fourth quarter of 2010 to finalize the agreements.

Kihnu is correct. Iran is talking and dealing, but US doesn't want any of it. They are playing directly against Iran ever since they were removed from Iran during their revolution which brought Iran back in control of their own nation. They don't have Western International Companies, IMF loans, and other forms of controls dictating them to be Western puppets. If Iran is pursuing Nuclear weapons, it is a direct response to Western foreign policy. India and Pakistan went nuclear and they immidiately were not threatened and America begun working with them. North Korea although threatened hasn't been invaded. Some more hypocracy comes when US doesn't do anything about Israels nuclear weapons. US has military bases completely surrounding Iran. They would be fools not to try and have nuclear weapons, if I was their president, I'd have them. Nuclear war is a low probability because Iran knows that it would be only used defensively as a stakes multiplier. If they were to use them offensively, they know there would be nothing left of Iran. However, this is odd speaking about what if because the two countries that have the biggest problems with Iran are the most aggressive nations in the world fighting endless wars. US has toppled some 50 governments and a lot of them were democracies. Iran in modern history hasn't invaded another country. Russia has just backstabbed this nation. Now it wants to pretend nothing happened and it is business as usual.... This is very sad. Another attempt by Medvedev to please the West and he'll get NOTHING in return.

mbach: "Russia will only end up being burned by Iran." If any one will burn Russia, it will be the US, and not Iran. Russia should have had enough self respect to vote against the US sponsored UN sanctions as Brazil and Turkey did. Now, Russia is back peddling trying to amend fences with Iran. Russia should understand that America and NATO are not her friends.
