Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev has reiterated his stance against the legalization of keeping and bearing arms in Russia, following the US school shooting which claimed the lives of 20 children and six adults.

“It’s a horrible tragedy, immeasurable pain. I totally agree with those who are against free arms circulation. This is my principled position,” Medvedev wrote on his Facebook page.

The Russian Prime Minister expressed his condolences on the Friday tragedy in Newtown, Connecticut, adding that “this monstrous crime cannot be justified.”

“Our thoughts are with the families of the killed children,” Medvedev said.

Earlier in December, the head of the government spoke against the legalization of guns in an interview with Russian TV channels. In the US, he said, where bearing and keeping arms is considered part of “American mindset and their legal and political culture,” many deaths occur because of improper and criminal use of weapons.

“I believe by no means we should go down that path,” Medvedev underlined.

In 2010, as Russia’s President, Medvedev tightened control over the use of non-lethal arms. He signed a law that increased liability for the illegal use, and trafficking of civilian firearms and other offensive weapons. The move followed a sharp rise in crime using shotguns where many people got wounded or even killed.

However, despite these incidents, recurring massacres in other countries and a recent mass murder in Moscow, a large group of activists insist that Russians should have a right to carry weapons to be able to protect their lives from criminals.

Sandy Hook gunman Adam Lanza, managed to bring all his three guns to the school illegally “as bearing weapons on its territory is banned,” observed the leader of the Russian movement “Right to Arms,” Maria Butina. Besides that, Connecticut state law requires residents to be 21 years old in order to possess a handgun, while Lanza was 20.

“How all these prohibitions can stop a criminal who plans a massacre?” she said in an article published by Izvestia daily.

According to the pro-gun activist, the deadly incident only proves the inefficiency of the prohibitive policies on civilian weapons. Six adults in the school had nothing to oppose the criminal and protect themselves and children, Butina noted.

What does Mr. Putin think about this? He is a gun enthusiast. When Russia gets invaded, their citizens will not be protected.

Medvedev, being a clownish showman that he is, giddily jumps on the anti-gun bandwagon.

Me dvedev knows full well what the greatest threat to the Russian society is - and, it is not guns.

Alcoholi sm is the curse of the the Russian people.  Drunken Russian men and women do not need guns to kill their spouses or neighbors.  Their favorite tool for this butchery is a rusty ax. F*cking idiot.

@ Tim

I agree with almost everything you say.

"Alcohol ism is the curse of  the Russian people."

Exce pt if you look at this statement further, you will realize that  this is also a symptom , not a core problem, the problem is the psychological and civil societal effects and legacy of "Communism" in essence the essential forceful grinding against everything that is "human" social and market .

in this way , also very strangely similar to Autism but without the actual physical genetic effects , so that is to say , it is a mental trauma but, as the 3 or 4 generations of damaged humans in the "West" ..

Russians should recover from "Communism" in less than a single generation , which is also evident already, and is accelerating , so for the PM to make such a statement is for him to admit that he has failed and furthermore that in a way he is saying that the Russian recovery is a failure.

I agree with the PM on almost every policy , except to agree that the Russian Federation is a failure , i do not believe that, and I believe the market will prevail.

I believe that Russians should be allowed to legally carry simple firearms.

it is a very important indicator of the success of the Russian Federation Society.

"Medvedev upholds Russian arms ban after US school massacre"

Hea ding should read:

"Medved ev upholds view that Russian citizen are not mature enough to own their own personal weapons , and that he agrees that this is generally a measure of a societal maturity , and he agrees that Russian society is not mature and does not deserve the right or the respect to own simple fire arms."

Or

“Russian PM believes that left to their own devices and given the means Russians will kill each other at will and on mass, and the only thin line that stops this is the “ban” on firearms…”

Or

“Russi an PM believes that only the police or criminals should own firearms .”

Or

“Russian PM amazingly believes Swiss culture an society superior to Russian Society”

lucky though most Russian citizens are beautifully the product of markets, not having been destroyed by "western" systems.
